Lake Erie is one of the Great Lakes and odds are you’ve heard of it before. It’s kind of too big to miss on any map of Canada, that’s for sure! But beyond the beaches and crazy amount of water, there are a ton of things about lake Erie that most people don’t know. In today’s blog we’ll be looking at 5 mind boggling things about this incredible body of water that you need to know! Maybe “need” is a little strong, but as you’re here, read on and be amazed!
#5: Lake Erie has more surface area than Lake Ontario but way less water!
I know, I get it, you’re wondering to yourself “how can it be bigger but have less water?” The secret? Lake Erie is a lot shallower! According to an article in Mental Floss, the average depth of lake Erie is only 62 feet whereas Lake Ontario’s average depth is a stunning 283 feet! We’re talking a lot of fresh water here. Lake Erie: 119 cubic meters of the clear stuff. Lake Ontario: 395 cubic meters!
#4: One side of the lake is usually deeper than the other
How can a flat lake be deeper on one side than the other? Wind! Yes, wind actually pushes the water to one side, and the stronger the wind the greater the difference in depths from one shore to the other. According to the Lake Erie Foundation, the record difference in water levels from East to West is over 16 feet! The effect is known as “Wind setups” and the effect is greater on Lake Erie than any of the other great lakes. Why? Back to Lake Erie being so shallow. Deep, right?
#3: Lake Erie was mentioned in the original version of Dr.Seuss’ “The Lorax”
According to BuzzFeed, the original version of the Lorax contained the line “I hear things are just as bad up in Lake Erie.” The line was only in the books for 14 years and the good Dr. removed it forever thereafter. Why? I don’t know why but I think we should start a campaign to put it back!
#2: Lake Erie is full of Vampires!
Lake Erie is full of vampires and they are possibly the ugliest and scariest creatures on earth! Sorry, we’re not talking about the famed “Bessie” of legend (you know, our very own Lock Ness Monster). Unlike Bessie, these monsters are real: Lampreys! They are an invasive species that should have stayed put in the ocean but they managed to hitch a ride on some boats and decided they like lake Erie. The bad news: According to WBFO their numbers are on the rise! And yes, they are really vampires. They use their circular teeth to grab on to fish and they suck their blood. Think of that the next time you go for a swim!
#1: Niagara Falls wouldn’t exist if we didn’t have Lake Erie
We saved the most shocking fact for last: Niagara Falls would be just a dry cliff if not for the generosity of Lake Erie. According to Wikipedia, my personal favorite great lake delivers a whopping six million cubic feet of water EVERY MINUTE!!! And yet all the fame goes to the ungrateful falls! It hardly seems fair, right? If it wasn’t for Lake Erie the wedding capital of the world would be the most boring place in the world.
Of course there are a ton more facts about Lake Erie that you can discover for yourself!
